RANK AND PROMOTION AUTHORITY
This document outlines the professional hierarchy and advancement criteria for all 2/17 Delta operators. The objective of this system is to ensure that leadership positions and technical MOS are provided to the personnel who have demonstrated core competencies in their respective fields, consistent attendance and a commitment to the unit’s core values.
Rank in 2/17 is not a reward for time spent; it is a recognition of increased responsibility. As an operator moves up the chain, the focus shifts from individual weapon proficiency to the command and control (C2) of others.
Junior Enlisted: Focus on technical execution.
Non-Commissioned Officers: Focus on Small Unit Tactics, mentorship and field accountability.
Commissioned Officers: Focus on mission planning, strategic coordination with Regulars and unit administration.
Time in Grade (TIG): Represents the minimum duration a member must hold their current rank before being eligible for the next. This ensures that experience is gained at every level.
Operational Requirement: Promotions to leadership billets are vacancy based. A member may meet all criteria but will only be promoted when a leadership slot opens or the unit expands.
The “Delta” Standard: Unit Command reserves the right to freeze or frock ranks based on exceptional performance or disciplinary issues, regardless of Time in Grade.
